Robotics and Computing Programme
Sec 1 and 2 Robotics and Computing
Programme integrated with Mathematics and Science
Under the strand of Science and Technology Education as part of the schools’ Signature Programme, the robotics and computing programme (RCP) using LEGO EV3 Robots was introduced to all lower secondary students in 2015. All Sec 1 and 2 students go through 1 Semester each of RCP integrated with Mathematics (Sec 1) and Science (Sec 2).
Computing and coding has been re-introduced in UK mainstream schools to children as young as 5 years old. In May 2016, Japan is also making it mandatory for computer programming to be taught in school starting in 2020.
Both countries are hoping these initiatives will lead to improving students’ creativity and logical thinking.
Similarly in Zhonghua, we believe starting the program will allow our students to not only be consumers of technology, but to one day be able to create their own programs too.
LEGO EV3 Robots in Action
By the end of the programme, we believe students would become Self-Directed Learners in creating the programs to run the robots. They would be able to question and persevere in debugging and getting their robots running. In the process, students also learnt about algorithmic problem solving skills and technological skills while constructing, programming and experimenting with the robots.
Moreover, students can become Confident Individuals as they work in their groups to complete the different tasks given to them. Everyone plays an important role in making their robots work. This programme would help boost their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The programme will also end off with a challenging task for students to apply what they have learnt. They become Active Contributors as they think of innovative and creative ways to solve the challenge, at the same time being prepared to take small risks in tweaking their programs to complete the tasks.
in Robotics and Computing Lessons infused in Math and Science
Since 2015, the school in partnership with Nanyang Polytechnic has organised the annual Sec 1 Robotics and Computing Festival, where all the Sec 1 students learnt about the latest in STEM from experts in the fields, and the Sec 1 students compete against one another in the Inter-class Robotics Challenge. We were also joined by Primary school students who are interested in Robotics and Computing.
Students who show interest and potential in Coding can choose to take up GCE “O” Computing, an O-Level subject offered in our school starting in 2017.
